According to the majority of scholars, it begins with the disappearance of the reddish twilight from the horizon. Abū Ḥanīfah held that it begins with the disappearance of the white glow that follows. Based on observational data drawn from a recent study of over 1,350 manuscripts of Muslim astronomers, the disappearance of the reddish twilight has been found to occur at around 17 degrees [1]. The 15-degree position for Ishāʾ is a very slim minority view.
