This is especially since I experienced a great deal of racism growing up to the point that I have deep racial trauma and if I think about my experiences too much I start feeling listless, helpless, so angry, lightheaded and nauseous. Of course this is separate from religious discrimination which I’ve never personally experienced as I’ve never been so visibly Muslim but it feels so similar and just considering it makes my head and my heart ache.\\n\\nI am truly a very sensitive person and I know that putting on hijab is willingly adding an entirely new visible thing on top of my skin color and features that can potentially cause me more heartache. I’ve been getting a little better with my trauma and I don’t want to break all over again. When I hear about violent things happening to our hijabi sisters in the news it makes me fear for my future self.\\n\\nSurely, those women have such deep trust in Allah and make their duaas but something still happened to them-if I’m alone outside and someone’s angry that’s it what can I do I’m not physically capable of protecting myself and suddenly I’ll have another crack in my heart. I don’t mean to be negative but this is honestly where my thoughts go sometimes and this is one of the biggest things that’s stopped me from wearing hijab all these years.\\n\\nWhat are some things that may help me keep my resolve to put it on and keep it on strong, not care what people think of my hijab, not anticipate negative interactions, and heal from racial trauma?\\n\"}]}","answer":"{\"ops\":[{\"insert\":\"May Allah ﷻ reward you for this journey towards fulfilling the command of Allah ﷻ and make it easy on you insha’Allah. The religious trauma and discrimination that you have experienced growing up, certainly may be adding to the anxieties and fears that you are experiencing about the hijab. I would advise you to prioritize seeking counseling to heal from these traumas, as that will provide ease for you insha’Allah.\\n\\nAllah ﷻ has gifted us with many ways to protect ourselves from harm and reciting dhikr in the morning and eventually working your way up to the evening, is one of the best methods of protection.\\nOne of the most common litanies recited is that of Imam An-Nawawi, may Allah ﷻ be pleased with him , and can be found here:\\nhttps://www.randdiab.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/Wird_of_Imam_an_Nawawi_d_676_AH.pdf.\\nYou can also recite Ayat al Kursi, along with Surat Ikhlas, Al Nas and Al Falaq regularly for protection.\\n\\nWe are living in difficult times, especially as Muslims in the West and community is very important. Surround yourselves with Muslim sisters who can encourage you and propel you forward on this journey. We are not meant to go through the trials of this dunya alone. A righteous and genuine friend, may be just what you need to provide that push of love and encouragement, to get you to the finish line.\\n\\nStay close to Allah ﷻ during this time of transition and ask him for the resolve and strength that you need. Do not underestimate the power of duaa.
