[2:186]\\n\\nThe Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:\\n“Not a single Muslim prays for anything that is not a sin or a severance of family ties without Allah giving him one of three things: He either gives him what he asked for immediately, saves it for him for the Afterlife, or averts from him a calamity of similar magnitude.” The companions responded, “In that case, we’ll make a lot of dua.” The Prophet replied, “Allah is yet greater [in generosity].” [Narrated by Imam Ahmad]\\n\\nTherefore, Allah, Transcendent and Majestic, always responds to our prayers, but the response can occur in three ways:\\n\\n1. He gives us exactly what we asked for.\\n2. He saves us from some affliction that would have befallen us.\\n3. He saves the reward of the supplication for the Afterlife.\\n\\nAll of the above is true when the person's dua was accepted by Allah. There are times when dua would not be accepted, such as from someone whose livelihood is haram. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) mentioned a man who was on a long journey, disheveled and dusty, raising his hands to the sky saying, ‘O Lord, O Lord,’ while his food was unlawful, his drink was unlawful, his clothing was unlawful, and he was nourished with unlawful things.
