I was talking to an individual and he was talking down on Al Azhar saying that they have a lot of Ashari influence like it was a bad thing. Are there different types of asharis? Are they still considered people of the sunnah? Are there any videos or books to learn about these differing theologies?","answer":"{\"ops\":[{\"insert\":\"The Ashʿarīs, in conjunction with the Māturīdīs, along with a minority of Ḥanbalīs, represent the mainstream Sunni creed. Regrettably, contemporary critics unjustly target the Ashʿarīs and Māturīdīs, attempting to label them as deviant sects—a notion far removed from the truth. Every traditional Islamic institution, be it renowned universities like al-Aẓhar or Qarawiyyīn, various Dār al-ʿUlūms, or seminaries, teaches the works of the Ashʿarīs or Māturīdīs. This is because, for over a millennium, the majority of Muslim scholars have followed these two schools. \\n\\nHere's a quote from Imām al-Subkī that summarizes exactly who the Ashʿarīs are: \\\"They did not innovate a novel opinion or develop a new doctrine, rather they only confirmed the doctrine of the Salaf and defended the way of the companions of the Prophet ﷺ. Ascription to him (Imām al-Ashʿarī) is only due to the fact that he was considered a spokesman for the way of the Salaf and had held firmly to it and established proofs and evidence for it. The one who follows him in that and treads his path in proofs is called an Ashʿarī”. The same can be said of the Māturīdīs.\\n\\nIt is crucial for us to educate ourselves about our tradition to prevent being misled into forsaking our rich scholarly heritage for narrow doctrines or simplistic ideologies. Avoid searching the internet toxic landscape for information on Ashʿarīs because the overwhelming majority of search results propagate anti-Sunni dogma. This misleading content is often being spread by often sincere individuals who have been brainwashed to unknowingly disown and attack their own tradition. \\n\\nMay Allah protect and rid us of all of these dangerous trends.
