For example at a coffee shop, tipping the barista. Or at a salon, tipping the stylist. Would it be different for tipping at a restaurant where tipping is expected?","answer":"Voluntary tips would fall under a sharia category called hiba (gifts), which are perfectly halal to give and to take. There is no sharia limit or minimum, it’s according to local customs. The only thing to be careful with as a Muslim is asking for a tip, it’s not befitting for a Muslim to ask (unless they are poor) or pressure or shame anyone into giving them anything. Imam Ghazali says in Ihya ulum al-din that if someone asks another person for something in front of others and he gives it to him out of embarrassment and he would not have given it otherwise, then it’s haram. So, as long as tips are entirely voluntary, it’s all good inshāʾa Allah. If your intention is to offer your tip as sadaqa (voluntary charity), it will be classified as such; otherwise, it will be considered as a hiba. The distinction between a hiba (gift) and sadaqa (charity) lies in the fact that a hiba can be given to anyone, including the wealthy, and for various reasons, whereas sadaqa is primarily directed towards individuals in need. The key factor distinguishing the two is the intention behind the act.","tags":[{"_id":"668d9fe40b76658b4c23283a","tag":"Contemporary Life: Other","count":138},{"_id":"668d9ff20b76658b4c2329d9","tag":"Worship: Intention","count":110},{"_id":"668da0370b76658b4c233134","tag":"Worship: Charity","count":65},{"_id":"668d9ff00b76658b4c2329b3","tag":"Gifts","count":7}],"createdOn":"2024-07-09T20:40:23.777Z"}
